Materialistic luxuries aren’t for people like us.

Did you grow up with the essentials to survive, but when it came to material things you wanted they were often too expensive or not for “people like us”?

I remember when I was a teenager, I desperately wanted this pair of pink converse high tops, so much that I nagged mum and dad for months to buy them for me.

Eventually they did for my birthday and I loved them, but as my mum loves to remind me, I barely ever wore them before I was onto the next thing. Typical teenager😅

I never really had the brand label clothes like some of my friends, and of course that is what I wanted.

My parents would say “money doesn’t grow on trees” and that if I wanted to have brand labels clothes then I would need to get a job and buy them myself.

I now look back as a parent of three myself and I can appreciate the lessons they were trying to teach me, reflection is a beautiful tool to put things in perspective isn’t it?

I know they didn’t have the money to be spending big on materialistic things for us four kids (yes 4 of us by the age of 27, so it’s understandable) but I do know they always spent money on the things they valued for us and the betterment of our lives.

I like materialistic luxuries as much as the next person, so now I make a conscious choice to choose quality items when I desire something to last, over buying whatever is on sale or whatever is the cheapest option.

There will come a point in your money journey that you start filtering your search by '“best rated” rather than price “lowest to highest” and that my friend, is a really nice feeling.

Does it mean you will see me rocking designer brands?

Who knows, but right now I will continue (as my parents taught me) to spend my money with intention on what is of value to me and betterment of my life and my family’s lives.

Remember that it is never about what you spend, it is always about the reason that you are spending that leads you to your money story.

Carla xx
